Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (acib) Develops Advanced
STYRIA, AUSTRIA, August 30, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- "Fuel instead of food", is currently a common question - although this need not be. The first generation of biofuels is mostly made of corn, wheat or sugarcane. But that's not exactly the ideal solution. Biofuels of the 2nd generation are made of agricultural waste - from wood chips, straw or specially cultivated "energy crops". The Austrian competence centre acib (Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology) has found ways to make these renewable sugar resources available for industry and for the production of biofuels.
The enzymes that are used are called cellulases. They can cleave cellulose and hemicellulose - both components of wood (besides lignin) - into small sugar molecules, explains Professor Christian Kubicek of the Technical University of Vienna. In the framework of the center of excellence acib, he works together with researchers in Graz and at an industrial partner's site on the access of new industrial sugars from renewable resources. The enzymes work like choppers, says Professor Anton Glieder, scientific director of acib, "the long cellulose chains are transported through the enzymes. Thereby, the enzyme cuts small sugar molecules off the comparatively huge cellulose chain, until the whole cellulose is digested into smaller sugars." The best enzymes for the process are produced using the fungus Trichoderma reesei, which normally grows on decaying wood residues. In the Styrian project "MacroFun" at Graz University of Technology the fungal enzymes are be improved by using the yeast Pichia pastoris to make the "molecular shredder" more robust, declares Glieder.
Admittedly, the general procedure is still extensive, says Kubicek. The plant remains or "energy crops" such as flower stalk grass (Miscanthus) or switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) must first be "unlocked" to separate the lignin and make the cellulose accessible. Then specially designed cellulases come into play and cleave the long cellulose chains into small sugars. These are finally converted - similar to the alcoholic fermentation in wine - from yeast to bioethanol, which can then be used for biofuels. The great advantage of this method: food remains completely unaffected and the carbon footprint looks a lot better.
How promising this type of sugar and subsequently biofuel production is, shows the fact that in Europe alone 400 million tons of wheat straw per year accumulate. To ensure a sustainable use, 30% of them remain on the field to regenerate the soil, but the enormous residue can be processed further. German opposition chief hints he won't challenge Merkel
BERLIN (Reuters) - The head of Germany's opposition Social Democrats (SPD) said on Thursday the arrival of his new baby means he will work less, in the strongest signal yet that he will stand aside to let a rival challenge Angela Merkel for the chancellorship next year.
The race to be the party's candidate to stand against Merkel in next September's election has overshadowed the media's coverage of the SPD this year, not least because there is no single obvious candidate.
The SPD is still trailing Merkel's conservatives by a good ten points in most polls and it has struggled to present policies distinct from those of the ruling coalition both on the euro zone crisis and domestic issues.
There are three likely contenders, including 52-year-old party chairman Sigmar Gabriel who recently became a father and drew criticism for taking a break from politics to look after his baby girl.
Gabriel, a former environment minister and state premier, is known as a feisty campaigner. But he seen by many voters as too mercurial to lead the country and suffers from stubbornly low popularity ratings.
In an interview with Stern magazine, Gabriel said his situation had changed since becoming a father, that he had not spoken to his wife about a move to the German capital and that his family liked living "in the provinces", away from Berlin.
"I will not be available 12 to 16 hours a day and able to be on the road. That won't be possible," he was quoted as saying, adding that being chancellor was not a part-time job.
Gabriel also said that while any party chairman should want to be chosen to run in a national election, "he should also have the deference to stand aside if he has the impression that someone else is a more suitable candidate".
The SPD has said it will decide on its candidate early next year. If Gabriel does stand aside, he would leave two rivals, both of whom served as ministers with him in Merkel's "grand coalition" from 2005 to 2009.
Straight-talking former finance minister Peer Steinbrueck, viewed by some as a loose cannon, started campaigning for the candidacy last year but is unloved by the party's left-wing and some analysts are already ruling him out.
That leaves Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a respected former foreign minister who is the most popular of the three.
However, his track record does not offer much hope. In 2009, he ran against Merkel and delivered the party's worst performance since World War Two, winning 23 percent of the vote.
Many analysts think Merkel's conservative bloc will emerge as the strongest party in next year's election but that she will end up in another right-left coalition with the SPD.
A Forsa poll this week put Merkel's conservatives on 39 percent and the SPD on 26 percent. The pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), who share power in Merkel's centre-right coalition were on 5 percent, down from over 14 percent in the last election. The SPD would prefer to share power with the Greens, who are polling 12 percent.

RI board takes up 38 Studios litigation committee
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) ? The board of Rhode Island's economic development agency is considering a step toward possible legal action in connection with its $75 million loan guarantee to Curt Schilling's failed video game company.
At its meeting Monday night, the Economic Development Corp. board is expected to discuss and vote on approving what the agenda calls a litigation subcommittee "related to 38 Studios."
The EDC in June hired an outside attorney to determine whether there is any third-party liability related to the loan guarantee offered in 2010 to Schilling's company, which has filed for bankruptcy.
An EDC spokeswoman said last week the board's discussion is "part of the next step of looking into possible legal action."

Egypt reopens Gaza border crossing for passengers
EL-ARISH, Egypt (AP) ? An Egyptian security official says Egypt has reopened its passenger terminal with the Gaza Strip and resumed normal operations there after nearly three weeks of disruption following a deadly attack on Egyptian soldiers by Islamic militants.
The official said from inside the Rafah crossing that it will be open six days a week, with normal security measures. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.
The closure of the terminal raised tensions between Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, and Gaza's ruling Hamas, which had hoped Morsi would end the enclave's five-year isolation.
Egypt shut down the terminal after 16 Egyptian soldiers were shot dead by masked gunmen while breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan on Aug. 5.

Eisenhower declined, partly because he did not particularly like or trust Nixon, but mostly because he thought it was important to hand over a more nearly balanced budget to his successor.
The framework for U.S. macroeconomic policy changed dramatically when the international monetary system broke down in 1971. The U.S. could no longer maintain a fixed exchange rate between the dollar and gold?the cornerstone of the postwar Bretton Woods system. The arrangement collapsed because the U.S. did not want to tighten monetary policy and run more restrictive fiscal policy: Keeping U.S. voters happy was understandably more important to President Nixon than maintaining a global system of fixed exchange rates.
Ironically, however, rather than undermining the predominant international role of the U.S. dollar, the end of Bretton Woods actually boosted its use around the world. Much has been written, and many hands wrung, about the dollar?s decline over the last four decades, but the fact remains that holdings of U.S. dollar assets by foreigners today are vastly greater than they were in 1971.
This turns out to be a mixed blessing, because it has allowed the U.S. to become less careful about its fiscal accounts. Foreigners now hold roughly half of all U.S. federal government debt, and they are willing to hold it when it yields a very low return in dollars (and even when the dollar depreciates).
In fact, whenever the world looks unstable, investors want to hold more dollar assets?even when the U.S. is the cause of the instability. When big U.S. banks are in trouble or Americans are having another debilitating political fight over their public finances, global investors scramble into U.S. Treasuries. Last year?s congressional showdown over the federal debt ceiling may have cost the country its AAA sovereign rating with Standard & Poor?s, but the federal government?s borrowing costs are actually lower now than they were then.
What has America done with this opportunity?arguably the lowest-cost funding in the history of humankind? Not much, in terms of productive investment, strengthening education, or maintaining essential infrastructure. But the U.S. has done a great deal in terms of adopting tax cuts that boost consumption relative to income and lower government revenue relative to expenditure. This is the lasting legacy of the Bush tax cuts.
And Americans have shifted greatly toward political philosophies?on the right and on the left ?that regard public debt merely as a distraction. Or, as Dick Cheney put it, ?Reagan taught us that deficits do not matter?? meaning that Ronald Reagan cut taxes, ran bigger deficits, and did not suffer any adverse political consequences.
?Ryan and other Republicans undoubtedly want to cut the size of the federal government, and they have articulated plans to do this over several decades. But, in the near term, what they promise is primarily tax cuts: Their entire practical program is frontloaded in that direction. The calculation is that this will prove politically popular (probably true) while making it easier to implement spending cuts down the road (less obvious). The vulnerability caused by higher public debt over the next few decades is simply ignored.
For example, Ryan supported George W. Bush?s spending spree. He also supports maintaining defense spending at or near its current level?resisting the cuts that were put in place under the Budget Control Act of 2011.
The assumption here?unstated and highly questionable?is that the U.S. will be able to sell an unlimited amount of government debt at low interest rates for the foreseeable future. There is no other country in the world where fiscal conservatives would want to be associated with such a high-stakes gamble.

Why you don't need an unlimited data plan on your Android or iPhone
Most smartphone users don't hit the 2GB per month data cap, according to a study by NPD Connected Intelligence. The company tracked data usage by 1,000 Android users.

That sounds wonderful, but for most people in the U.S., it's also irrelevant.
That's what data on smartphone usage by research firm NPD Connected Intelligence indicates. The company has installed an app on 1,000 Android smartphones of volunteers to track how much data people consume each month. Though iPhones aren't included, analyst Eddie Hold told TechNewsDaily that iPhone usage is pretty similar and that they will begin collecting information from iPhones in the next few months.

TechNewsDaily was the first to see NPD's latest data for July. And the numbers make it hard to see why most people should fret about data caps. The overwhelming majority of customers on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon don't even use 2GB per month, which is below the data caps for all but the stingiest plans from all carriers for the common two-year contracts. And virtually no one uses over 3GB. (Sprint is the one carrier that has already been offering unlimited data plans.)

T-Mobile, however, does have the most data-hungry users, according to NPD. Eleven percent of customers use more than 3GB per month, versus 4 percent for AT&T and Sprint and 3 percent for Verizon.
"T-Mobile consumers tend to be younger," said Hold. "Younger demographics are the ones we find hit the network harder by doing a little video and music streaming."
And even when customers have had unlimited data at their fingertips, as on Sprint, most didn't take advantage of it. "In general, Sprint's usage is the same as the other networks and less than T-Mobile," Hold said.
One reason people stay under their limits is that they often use their smartphones over Wi-Fi. And even if people use only the cellular network, they will probably be fine. For example, 2GB per month is enough to do all the basics, such as email, Web surfing and Facebook posting, as well as streaming music for 30 minutes per day.
