Zero Dark Thirty (2012) ****

A female CIA agent doggedly pursues leads to the whereabouts of terrorist Osama bin Laden in director Kathryn Bigelow's you-are-there almost documentary style drama that follows a decade-long path. At first confusing and slow, the film picks up momentum as Maya and her team close in on the reclusive al-Qaeda leader. (2:35/R)

Gangster Squad (2013) *****
Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte. A secret police squad is sent on a hush-hush mission to stop mobster Mickey Cohen from building a West Coast empire in 1949, using strong-arm gangster methods to do it. Strong performances and violent thrills mark this film which harkens back to the great Warner Bros. gangster films of the 1930s. (1:53/R)
